Cycling Club

During the year, nine of us in Year 6 have been coming to Cycling Club, every Friday after school. The Club is run by Mr Cassidy and Mr Mahmood. We have learned lots of cycling skills and we have spent the year practising for a competition.

Mr Cassidy and Mr Mahmood found it very difficult to decide on the four riders for the competition team, as we all have lots of good qualities and skills. Those of us who were not chosen to ride were given jobs to do at the competition, as we were organising the event here, at Spoltand.

The IPLCN Cycling Competition took place last Friday, 7th July. It was on Lenny Barn. The weather was kind to us, and it didn’t rain – it was perfect cycling weather. Three other teams took part in the competition. They were St. Andrew’s, Hamer and Norden.

We had lots of races each. Some were long races, and others were short races. It is really difficult racing on the grass – much different from riding on the street or playground.

Competition was fierce and we found it hard. There were some very fast riders from all of the schools. Some we won. Some we didn’t.

We were cheered on by lots of children from Spotland, who came out to support us. Mr Johnson used the megaphone to encourage all of the riders. It was a great atmosphere.

At the end of the competition, we carried all of the equipment in and then went to the hall for the prize giving. We were very nervous, as we did not know the final result yet.

Finally, the scores were added up and announced in reverse order. Norden… Hamer…, St. Andrew’s…. The winners were Spotland!!! We are so proud. We get to keep the cup for the year.

Yesterday we all went to the Manchester indoor BMX Centre, to end our year. It was a great way to celebrate our success. It was so exciting. We thoroughly enjoyed it.
